Chile shuts down capital city metro as violent protests spread

SANTIAGO, Oct 18 (Reuters) - Chilean officials shut down the metro system in Santiago on Friday after demonstrators protesting recent fare hikes took to the streets and attacked subway stops, leaving widespread damage across the capital city of nearly 6 million people.

Black-hooded protesters lit fires at the entrances to several stations, burned a public bus and swung metal pipes at train station turnstiles during the Friday afternoon commute.

Thousands more joined after nightfall, clanging pots and blocking traffic in the normally subdued South American capital.

Bird strikes US 'doomsday' plane, causing millions in damage

A wayward bird struck one of the plane's four engines when it was landing on October 2, temporarily grounding it and causing at least US$2 million in damage.

“The Afghan government strongly condemns today’s "Muslim's murdering Muslim's Suicide Attack" in a mosque in Nangarhar province”.

Witnesses said the roof of the mosque had fallen through after the “loud” explosion. Some 350 worshippers were inside at the time.
